William Watts Sherman House, Rhode Island

The William Watts Sherman House in Rhode Island is the American prototype of the shingled Tudor manor house. With an exterior finish predominately shingled, the front façade does include the typical Tudor half-timbering detail. Henry Hobson Richardson (R) is the architect and Stanford White designs the interior. According to the Historic American Building Survey, this 1875 house popularizes this English architectural style in America. The Tudor style becomes popular for single family homes in the 1920s and 1930s and revived again in the 1970s and 1980s.
